Dornubari Tornwe, president of SBOA elaborates on the history of the SBOA, its formation and its goal to represent the unique interests of Alberta sheriffs.
Why We Formed SBOA
The decision to form SBOA comes after careful consideration and years of planning. As sheriffs, we comprise only a small fraction of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE), making it challenging to effectively advocate for our specific needs. Our profession requires tailored support, and we believe that forming our own association is the best way to achieve this.
Advocating for Our Needs
Dornubari Tornwe, president of SBOA and an Edmonton-based sheriff, emphasizes that the new union will focus on critical issues that have been overlooked by AUPE. These include:
- Better Wages: Sheriffs deserve fair compensation comparable to other law enforcement officers with similar responsibilities.
- Mental Health Support: Our work exposes us to intense and often traumatic situations. Adequate mental health programs are essential to ensure our well-being.
- Legal Representation: Currently, sheriffs receive only limited legal support, which is insufficient given the nature of our work. SBOA will push for comprehensive legal representation for all members.
- Professional Development: Opportunities for growth and development are crucial for maintaining a skilled and motivated workforce.
- Improved Working Conditions: We will strive to create a safer and more supportive working environment for all sheriffs.
Our Commitment to You
SBOA is committed to tirelessly advocating for our members' needs. We believe that by focusing on the specific challenges faced by sheriffs, we can secure better outcomes for everyone. We are currently seeking recognition from the province to allow us to represent our interests independently and bargain on our behalf.
